Bozcaada From The Air

Bozcaada
If one is looking for a calm and peaceful time, in
a unique setting of pine groves, vineyards, rich history, serene
beaches and coves, clean air, scrumptious seafood, and
deliciously tempting wine… then the tiny island of Bozcaada may
be just what the doctor ordered. If you want to experience the
“White Cliffs of Dover”, the “Wine Country of Provence”, and
the” Idyllic Beaches of the Tropics” all in one day, then this
secret paradise at the mouth of the Dardanelles awaits you. For
some
Bozcaada is the “Tenedos” of Homer – the
extension of the ancient city of Troy, just a stone-throw away.
The battlefields of Gallipoli can be reached in two hours. For
others it is the secret they would like to keep under wraps and
not share with anyone. But in the end everyone creates their own
Bozcaada, because this magical island with a permanent
population of 2500 – which skyrockets to 15000 in the summer
months – appeals to every taste and state of mind.
It
welcomes you in its crystal clear azure waters, and on its
golden sandy beaches, and lets its island breeze gently caress
you and cool you down, even on the hottest summer day. This tiny
island covers an area of 36 square miles and has a coast line of
14 miles covered by tiny coves and beaches, and from its summit
[Goztepe 192meters], you can see on a clear day as far as the
Greek islands of Lesbos, Limnos, Avios Evstratios, and the
Turkish Island of Gokceada. Once you taste the calamari and its
local wine, you will be hooked for life. It has a selection of
camp and picnic sites, and even during the crowded times it is
possible to find a secluded beach and enjoy the solitude and
peace. In this region, where fish is plentiful, you can enjoy
recreational fishing from a boat, as well as under water, and at
the same time enjoy recreational diving in crystal clear waters
rich in natural beauty, as well as shipwrecks. The island is as
such situated in an ideal location for underwater sports, and is
a favorite of deep-sea divers.
Great
progress has been made in recent years, on this island with its
authentic and well-preserved architecture. Roads reaching even
the most remote areas of the island, well maintained and
preserved natural beaches, clean water and power connections
from the mainland have added much to the appeal of this
paradise. Add to that a natural, invigorating cooling system –
the constant northerly wind called “Poyraz” by the locals – and
the not so salty and cool waters, providing fresh seafood like
lobster, crayfish, mussels, and clams, and we have ourselves a
winner par excellence.
Transportation to the island is by ferry, which is a pleasant
half hour ride from the mainland.
